It’s been a few months since Facebook announced changes to it’s rules around contests and promotions on the platform. These changes opened up a significant amount of new opportunities for Brands. The overall change was that brand pages were no longer required to serve contests through third party apps, and instead are able to do so on a page’s timeline itself, and in doing so could allow fans to submit entries via likes, comments, posts, and messages directly on Facebook. Since then, we’ve been observing how many of the bigger brand pages on Facebook are taking advantage of these changes. While many brands are excited to take advantage of this capability, we’ve definitely observed a learning curve as brands are balancing the appeal of lightweight timeline contests with a toolset that doesn’t really provide for them. A common example is a leading brand running a contest where they simple pick a random comment to reward, or fall back on having fans email someone at the company to enter.
